About Toplolly
Toplolly offers a podium to fantastic artistic ideas: imaginary works of art and existing works of art that defy the imagination. Toplolly is an ongoing project which relies on your input. You are invited to participate by adding your own ideas for works of art. Why not share them and bring them to life on Toplolly?
Click here to submit your idea.
As soon as you submit an idea it will be added to the ‘recent submissions’ list on the right side of the homepage. Within a couple of days your idea will be reviewed by the Toplolly editors (see below). You’ll get notified when this happens. Your idea(s) will remain your intellectual property at all times. We shall not edit your entry without your consent, nor will we publish your work anywhere else but on this website.
So what kind of art do you find on this website?
Toplolly has two main categories: realised and unrealised works of art. Extraordinary art works which have been realised, but which fall outside the scope of museums or galleries because of their physical scale or temporal nature. And secondly (and more importantly) on this website we collect ideas for works of art which haven’t been realised yet and are indeed unlikely to ever be realised at all because of physical, financial, political or ethical limits.
Curating the Improbable
On this website you find a collection of art which is impossible to physically bring together. The works on display don’t exist, can only exist for the briefest of moments, or are too big to be moved, for example. But on Toplolly these boundries of reality do not exist.
The people behind Toplolly
Toplolly started in may 2008. The editors are four friends from Rotterdam, the Netherlands (in alphabetical order):
> Maurits Hertzberger (artist) - www.hertzberger.net
> Melle Smets (artist) - www.mellesmets.nl
> Paul Swagerman (designer) - www.paulswagerman.nl
> Rien Swagerman (web enthusiast) - www.rienswagerman.nl
What is the ultimate goal of this website?
This website has no commercial aims whatsoever. We just liked the idea of creating an exhibition of improbable art. Man is not completely free but in his head. Toplolly aims to celebrate this freedom.
Where does the name ‘Toplolly’ come from?
Once upon a time one of us thought it was a good idea to open a webshop selling lollies. He registered the domain name, but never got round to actually selling lollies (funnily enough). When we were thinking about a name for this website he suggested Toplolly because he still owned the domain. Somehow it fits.
